DiaTrends is based
on a prototype which was first used in the busy diabetes practice of its clinical
endocrinologist-developers in 1996. This prototype provided a solid
foundation for determining the key features which are included in the commercial versions
of DiaTrends. In addition,
the developers conduct ongoing extensive literature reviews to help assure that the program is based on current evidence-based medical standards. This includes adherence to published guidelines, particularly:
- The American Diabetes Association (ADA) Clinical Practice Recommendations
- The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Guidelines for the Management of Diabetes Mellitus
In fact, the full contents of these guidelines are provided within
DiaTrends (with the permission of ADA and AACE) for easy, context-sensitive reference by the user.
DiaTrends allows the physician,
educator or other diabetes care provider to easily track adherence to key processes and outcomes of diabetes care in the population of people with diabetes for whom he or she is providing care. Its familiar Windows graphical user interface (and underlying relational database format) allows quick, easy, intuitive entry of a wide variety of patient information pertinent to diabetes care. Data can be easily updated at the time of each clinical encounter, and
trends can easily be reviewed in a consistent format. Color-coded prompts help remind the user of processes of care which may be due.
